2009 Awards - We've just launched our 2009 awards and the nominations are flooding in! What a pleasure they are to read, these classes and groups are making a real difference to your daily lives. Nominate your favourite on-line today!
£1 a buggy?! We've heard that some Sussex councils are charging parents to park their buggy during the free library music group. This can't be right and we hope they reconsider their decision.
Are you a budding children's author? Munch Bunch has a new initiative which will see six winning stories for children being published online as podcasts. As the voice of Munch Bunch's newest character, Munch the Cow, Gail Porter will record the stories which will then be made available for parents across the country to download. In just over a week, Organix will be bringing out a report that they have been working on with our friends at the Soil Association. This report is called Georgie Porgie Pudding and Pie: Exposing the Truth About Nursery Food. It is the first report to look closely at the state of the food served in nurseries in England and Wales and it reveals some very worrying facts.
 For example, at the moment, this is the situation regarding food in nurseries:
· No clear nutritional standards
· No agency to monitor the quality of food provided
· No Government funding available to help nurseries improve provision
· No compulsory training for nursery staff serving food
On October 21, they launch a campaign calling for Better Nursery Food Now. You can help them get this under way by signing their petition calling for better nursery food. Just go here. Mums in Business |
This month we feature Rebecca's story and find out how her children inspired her own business.
When Rebecca Owen, a Communicator for the Deaf, discovered the brilliance of Baby Signing after having her first daughter, Keira, in 2004. Keira (who is hearing) quickly picked up some signs which helped her communicate with her mum BEFORE she could talk.
Using sign did not delay her language at all - in fact Rebecca firmly believes that it accelerated it.
 This, coupled with her reluctance to return to the "day job" led Rebecca to found Musical Signers, a Baby Signing company. The Baby Signing classes are very popular as they are fun, lively and fast-paced (parents report children having a good, long, heaven sent nap afterwards!)
The birth of her second child, Rhianna who has a potential hearing problem, encouraged Rebecca to expand and begin teaching Deaf Awareness. Having studied British Sign Language level 1,2 & 3, qualifiying as a Communicator for the Deaf and living with a profoundly Deaf partner she's well informed and able to give both a hearing and deaf perspective.
Musical Signers can teach Deaf Awareness to all age groups but specialise in the 3-5 year range.
