| Local Focus... parenting news from around the UK |
| We've introduced a new regular feature picking up parenting stories from across the UK. If you have a story from your region that would be interesting for other parents please contact us.
And we've now introduced a Local Focus area to our forum so you can meet Mums local to you. Share your top tips on your town, places to eat, great shopping and things to do.
This month Sprouts magazine have been hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet!
At some point, your toddler is going to utter the dreaded words - 'Mummy, can I have a pet please?' When it happens, you have two choices: you can either give them a beetle in a matchbox and hope the novelty wears off or, you can start thinking about the pitter-patter of four tiny paws.
Over half of UK households now keep pets and there's much research indicating pets have particular benefits for children, including:
- Children learn to interpret their pet's body language which can help develop social skills and make them more adept at reading human body language.
- By caring for and playing with a pet, children can build on their spoken language.
- Pets capture the attention of children with special needs such as ADHT and Down's syndrome, which in turn helps develop their ability to concentrate.
- Pets can also encourage expression in withdrawn children, lower stress levels, improve self-esteem and help children to empathise in human relationships.
There are many animals which make good pets for little ones - from goldfish to rabbits, cats to dogs. Before choosing, you need to give careful consideration as to what best suits your lifestyle and what level of commitment you can give to a pet.
This month (April 5-May 5), is National Pet Month so there's no better time to explore the options and benefits - visit www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk for more info.

| And the winner is ... La Jolie Ronde |
|
Each month we feature one of our 2008 Award winners.
Languages in demand for 3 - 5 year olds
Tens of thousands of children enjoy La Jolie Ronde language classes each week in out of school centers and in nurseries across the UK.
La Jolie Ronde has been successfully offering language classes to nursery and primary aged children throughout the UK for over 25 years with fantastic results. All teachers use finger rhymes, songs and counting games in their lessons as well as the sound La Jolie Ronde methodology of language teaching which includes: immersion in French at the start of each lesson in le bain français, lots of repetition from week to week, introducing the target language through a game or activity, a counting game, reminding the group what they have learned today.
La Jolie Ronde lessons for nursery aged children last for about 20 minutes. This is long enough to include several different activities, and short enough to keep the children's attention.
Colette Hallam, Founder and Director of La Jolie Ronde says "Learning languages comes easy to young children. They have a keen ear and are very receptive. At this very young age, the strategies and language learning skills, which they use for developing their own language, are very active. It is the ideal time to familiarise them with sounds and patterns of a new language."
Parents are often amazed how much young children take in and how quickly they learn. Once children have started learning another language at this age, parents are keen for them to continue with La Jolie Ronde's structured programme so that they can be guided step by step continually revising vocabulary, learning new words and building their confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
On winning the best language class award from www.whatson4littleones.co.uk, Colette says, "We are delighted to win such an award especially because it is parents who have voted for us. It is extra special for us as this year sees us celebrate our silver jubilee and I feel very proud on behalf of all our licensees who have made La Jolie Ronde the company it is today."

Mums in Business |
You might remember we featured Gayle from Basingstoke as she started her Gymboree classes in September 2007.
We've now caught up with Gayle again as she is about to start her 3rd term of classes to find out how things have been.
"Well, Gymboree Basingstoke has been going for 6 months now and no-one said it would be easy!
We now have over 100 customers and are about to expand bringing our classes to a new venue with extra days and times. It does feel a bit like starting over but if we can make Gymboree accessible to lots more families, it is worth it.
We have met some fantastic children and parents and the smiles on the children's faces make the 18 hour days worth it! There have been lots of tears of frustration & hard lessons learnt along the way but the reason I took this on keeps me going - to provide a quality developmental activity for children that will really make a difference. And Gymboree does make a difference - seeing how far the children come on in a short space of time is proof of that!"
